Sweden has one of the highest standards of living in Europe, and there are few countries around the world that can be measured with Sweden. However, the risk of becoming poor keeps increasing every year. In Sweden children of low-income families rarely walk around hungry or cold because of their parents’ income. Rather it’s about not having the same opportunities as other children have in our society. To live and grow up in a disadvantaged family may affect a child’s upbringing. Statistically, there is a greater chance of being bullied or getting bad results in school. Children of low-income families, do not the same opportunities to be part of active leisure activities as other kids from other socioeconomic backgrounds. Today there is no official definition of poverty in Sweden. However, children that count as poor according to Swedish Red Cross - lives in a family that either has low-income or is in need of welfare in order cover necessities. During 2012, 230,000 children lived in poverty in Sweden. Behind these numbers are parents who want to give their children what they need to develop but cannot afford to. We at Gothenburg City Mission want to improve the situation for family members of low-income and disadvantaged families.
